Yellow Fish Road - Project Calgary

Trout Unlimited Canada
      Funded in 2003

The Yellow Fish Road program is an exciting initiative that involves youth groups and school children in helping to prevent water pollution by engaging their communities. Young water ambassadors paint small yellow fish symbols on storm drains in urban centres and then deliver material to households in the area to remind homeowners that anything washed down the storm drains flows untreated into the river. The aim is to ensure that Calgarians stop inappropriate activities such as washing cars in driveways or pouring paint or oil down storm drains.

With Alberta Ecotrust funds Trout Unlimited Calgary has hired a project coordinator to expand this established program. The group will broaden the educational aspect of the program and team up with the City of Calgary Wastewater division to scientifically measure the results of the childrens' outreach. This will result in a quantifiable demonstration that changing behaviours can lead to better quality water for all.
