 | Water For Life: Alberta's Strategy for Sustainabililty | | The Government has launched a comprehensive initiative that it hopes will culminate in actions and strategies for effective management of Alberta’s water resources now and into the future. The initiative will address pressing water issues such as how Alberta will deal with increased water demand, allocate water supply, ensure water quality and continue to regulate and prevent water pollution. Consultations included idea generation in early 2002, public consultation throughout March and April 2002, and a Ministerial forum in June 2002. By this fall, the result will be a provincial water strategy that identifies specific actions to further the four main objectives listed at the right. A multi-stakeholder Provincial Water Advisory Council will oversee the implementation of the Water For Life strategy and will act as a policy advisor to the Government. Watershed Advisory Councils will involve communities in planning, developing best water management practices, reporting on local watershed conditions, and educating end users. The Government of Alberta also recognizes and encourages the efforts of grassroots watershed protection groups. |
