Big Lake Environment Support Society (BLESS)
Big Lake - Sturgeon River Summer Environmental Education, St. Albert

Alberta Ecotrust funding will help the Big Lake Environment Support Society educate St. Albert youth and adults about the natural features and wildlife found in and around the Sturgeon River and the Big Lake Natural Area and the issues related to these natural resources. The educational materials will be delivered to interested members of the general public during regularly scheduled free events over the summer. The program will target elementary-aged students but will appeal to ages six through adult. From June to August a minimum of three public events will be held each week.

A number of the natural resources and features of the local environment in the St. Albert area including Big Lake have received international recognition for their wildlife value. Yet many of the local residents remain unaware of their significance.  Hence, BLESS, was formed to provide stewardship for these areas. Part of their overall mandate is to educate citizens about the environmental significance of the area. The Summer Nature Centre Program is a perfect program vehicle to teach both young and old alike on the wonders of nature and the value of the local natural environments of Big Lake and the Sturgeon River.

When asked why BLESS was offering free public programs, program coordinator Dan Stoker replied, "the intent all along has been to offer free access to our educational activities. We do not have the resources required to deliver a sophisticated educational program that would warrant charging a program fee. Besides, the majority of effort is voluntary and charging people to become more familiar with the natural wonders that are free to all, would be contrary to our intent. We hope more people will use their free time to enjoy these wonders of nature. Our educational efforts will encourage this."
