The way you think - your Mental Models - about the events that happen around you can have a profound impact on the way you react and the results that you achieve.
You are walking along the street downtown one dark night around 11 pm. It is quiet with very little traffic. You turn down a side street and halfway down the block you begin to hear footsteps. A little nervous you immediately begin to think of the news stories you have read over the years about muggings and assaults at night on the streets of the city.
You hear the footsteps getting closer and you begin to worry even more. Checking your pockets you begin looking for your cell phone in case you need to call for help. You step up the pace but the footsteps are getting louder and clearly, are gaining on you. You are beginning to sweat!
As you get near the end of the block, the footsteps are right behind you. Not knowing what else to do, you stop and turn to face the person coming up behind you.
You immediately recognize a colleague whom you spend a lot of time with. In great relief, you strike up a conversation and continue on in your walk together, enjoying each others company.
Your whole reality changed in a split second from one of fear and apprehension to one of relief, security and enjoyment. None of the facts of your situation changed, simply the way that you thought about those facts. Your mental model created a reality of fear based on the facts you had available. What if your mental model was different and you never had to experience that fear but were able to enjoy a chance meeting even earlier than you actually did because you were open to it?

We have all had opportunities presented to us and subsequently dismissed them without taking advantage because our existing mental models limited our responses.
You receive a brochure in the mail outlining a mortgage financing program that could potentially save you tens of thousands of dollars on your mortgage and personal debt. You immediately dismiss it as more direct mail junk because you have a belief that you already have the lowest rate from one of the big 6 banks. No new upstart could do better than they do, you say to yourself.

You missed out because your mental model would not allow you to consider such an alternative.
