OUT AND ABOUT IN YOUR COMMUNITY...

Thanks to the support of Environment Canada and Health Canada, WestJet Airlines and Alberta Ecotrust partners and supporters, the foundation will launch the new year with a series of new community engagement activities.

Community Dialogues on Alberta's
Urban Ecosystem Health

will be held on successive Saturdays in January at the following three locations across the province:

  • Lethbridge, January 10
  • Edmonton, January 17
  • Fort McMurray, January 24

Urban issues such as air and water quality, pesticides, waste management and transportation can impact health, social concerns and the economy.

These open dialogues are a fantastic opportunity to meet other community members interested in the environment, learn more about ongoing initiatives, exchange ideas and perhaps even recruit keen volunteers at the grassroots level.

Let's not work in isolation to find solutions!

Register early as space is limited. For more information or to download a registration form visit our website, or email chandora@shaw.ca.

New Partnership with
Alliance Pipeline Ltd.

by Donna Rapp

The Alliance Pipeline Ltd. Calgary Area Community Investment Council was looking to invest in Environmental Stewardship, one of five community investment sectors in their mandate. While the employee-run Council received many solicitations from other sectors, it was having some difficulty identifying Calgary-based environmental organizations that met its guidelines. When the Council asked its in-house environmental experts for advice, Alberta Ecotrust immediately came to mind.

Widespread Support for G8 Legacy Wildlife Bridges!
by Erin Burrell

Alberta Ecotrust is a special partner of the Kananaskis Summit Environmental Legacy, a program that was initially set up to commemorate the G8 Summit held in Kananskis in 2002. The Legacy's goals are to improve habitat connectivity and reduce wildlife mortality in the Bow Valley/Kananaskis region. Alberta Ecotrust accepts public donations into a special Kananaskis Legacy fund and these funds are directed by a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee into specific projects in the region.

The first Legacy project has just been completed - the construction of a wide, vegetated bridge over the Rundle hydroelectric canal on the outskirts of Canmore. The canal was an obstacle to animals attempting to bypass Canmore in the winter and resulted in human-wildlife conflicts. Though landscaping will not be completed until next spring, the bridge will be available for wild animals to use this winter and a monitoring program will measure its effectiveness.
