Mood and Gore:
Horror Films Most Profitable Genre
by Kody Zimmermann

In the independent motion picture market, Horror films are the most consistent genre to turn a profit.  The focus on mood, gore, and creative ingenuity instead of expensive celebrities and high production values, are the genre's strengths.  Horror films carry the reputation that with or without a major theatrical release, they are exceptionally lucrative.

Straight to video features like KING OF ANTS, DETOUR and SCARECROW: RESURRECTION are cashing in for their distributors, producers and investors. Not only does the genre carry a built-in hardcore audience, it has also become a demand for the mainstream movie-going public.

The recent successes of bigger budget horror films, like THE GRUDGE, CABIN FEVER, THE RING and DAWN OF THE DEAD, creates a market for similar films on a lower budget. Unlike most genres that cannot imitate the studio-driven film on a smaller scale, low-budget horror films often set the bar for the entire genre and reap the financial rewards for their mood and creativity. Horror films carry a powerful reputation with them: they are the most likely to succeed in the independent film marketplace, making them an extremely lucrative investment.

Zimmermann Selects DP

Salvatore Collura has agreed to be the Director of Photography for THE GHOSTWOODS.  Sal is an award-winning cinematographer that specializes in the artistic and the offbeat. He is best known for his speed and strength with the Steadicam.  By day, Sal is the Director of Photography for a national PBS series. He works on feature films, music videos, documentaries and commercials. Sal has shot all of director Kody Zimmermann's projects.

"It is always difficult to turn a director’s vision into exposed film," says Collura. "The trick is to have an ongoing relationship.  Kody and I have worked together a lot, I usually know what he wants before he does," jokes Collura.
