Grant Program Update
Ecotrust Makes its First Multi-Year Grant this Fall!

On November 16th, grant review committee members met in Calgary to discuss the fall round of grant proposals. As part of our new updated grant program, we were pleased to make our first multi-year grant to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Calgary/Banff Chapter. A total of $193,000 was committed to 12 organizations. In keeping with the top environmental priorities identified in our recent “Maximizing Effectiveness” survey of Albertans, all of the successful projects will employ strategies focused on the protection, conservation or maintenance of water, air or wilderness.

Click here to download a summary of Nov 2005 grant recipients or visit our website for full details on our grant program, for an application checklist and FAQ's.

Capacity Corner:  Communications

Being able to communicate with a target audience is an essential skill that every organization must develop.  Fundraising campaigns, media interviews and community-based social marketing programs are just some of the many examples of how non-profit organizations must communicate with a variety of audiences. Communicating your message effectively doesn't have to be complicated - it does however require careful thought, planning and creativity. The Ecotrust Capacity Corner has developed a Communications page highlighting useful resources for planning and implementing a successful communications plan.

Alberta Ecotrust Partners with the Sustainability Network to Launch Alberta Nexus

Alberta Ecotrust and the Sustainability Network are joining forces to enhance access to environmental and voluntary sector resources for folks in  Alberta. The Sustainability Network currently produces Nexus, a well established resource originating in Ontario that provides access to a variety of resources including journal articles and books as well as training and development opportunities in other regions of Canada.

Alberta Nexus, to be launched in January 2006, is an electronic newsletter focused primarily on local and regional capacity building resources for environmental non-profit and grassroots community organizations in Alberta and is supported in part through Alberta Ecotrust’s new Capacity Building Program.

Feedback from our Last Offer

"Thank-you for providing me the opportunity to attend "Introduction to Volunteer Management" at Volunteer Calgary. It was extremely informative and I’ll be able to apply many of the modules to my position. The course explained in depth - how to recruit volunteers, keep them satisfied and how to minimize risk for staff and volunteers. Being able to network with others in the not-for–profit sector was also invaluable. On behalf of the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society I would like to thank Alberta Ecotrust for allowing me to partake in this inspiring experience."

Bonnie Castle-Dixon,  Program Director
Friends of Fish Creek Park Society

Alberta Ecotrek
First-time Event a Winner on Many Fronts!

On September 10th and 11th Alberta Ecotrust held Alberta Ecotrek in Kananaskis Country, a new partnership initiative in cooperation with a number of local conservation and environmental groups.  Despite "extreme" weather challenges, with over 90 participants and 40 hard-working volunteers, the event was a fantastic opportunity to engage and educate young adventure seekers about environmental stewardship and responsible recreation in our mountain ecosystems.

Invest Energy Rebate in Long-term Environmental Solutions!

You may already have a list of plans of how to spend your provincial rebate set to arrive in most Albertan's mail boxes in January. Here's one more option we ask you to consider.

Alberta Ecotrust makes strategic investments on behalf of our donors into projects undertaken by community-based environmental organizations to produce long-term outcomes addressing priority areas such as the protection, conservation or maintenance of our water and air resources, wilderness areas and urban landscapes.    An investment in Alberta Ecotrust is an investment in the health and welfare of all Albertans!
