Waste Wise Community Outreach

80/20 by 2020 - Help Us Turn It Around!

Did you know that In Calgary 80% of all waste goes to a landfill site?  Only 20% of waste is diverted for recycling. This isn’t really very good.  Calgary is getting a reputation for being the most wasteful city in Canada . We have one of the lowest recycling rates of any city in Canada . But nobody wants to be wasteful on purpose.

The City of Calgary   has a long-term goal to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills to just 20%, and recycling or recovering 80% of waste materials by the year 2020. So, we have to turn the numbers all the way around. read more....

Calgary Materials Exchange

The Calgary Materials Exchange (CMEX) works to build relationships between companies and provide opportunities and information to facilitate exchanges of material for reuse and recycling. By-products from one company may be usable by another company.

The CMEX staff work directly with each company at a personal level to meet the unique needs of your company. By providing the contacts and resources necessary to find alternative disposal solutions, CMEX staff empowers each company to be more responsible with their waste. Along with personal and direct services, an on-line exchange, www.cmex.ca will provide companies with a convenient medium to list materials and products that are available or wanted for exchange.

Volunteer Profile: Alycia Mutual

Clean Calgary Association offices and booths are graced every week or so with the dedicated help and quiet presence of volunteer Alycia Mutual. This past year Alycia was awarded the 2005 Outstanding Volunteer Contribution Award from Clean Calgary.

Recently Alycia graduated from high school and will be entering the University of Calgary in the fall working towards a degree in Communications. Alycia has been awarded the Early Entrance Award and the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship.

Alycia is dedicated to increasing environmental awareness through education and is known for walking the walk or biking the bike as she bikes everywhere, composts her households organic waste, recycles, conserves water and is an avid activist (beware the politician who receives one of her letters). She is an inspiration to young and old citizens alike. Thanks Alycia!
