Tip of the Month: change at least one light bulb to a compact fluorescent
Compact fluorescent:
- Use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer;
- Save $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb's lifetime;
- Generate 70 percent less heat, so they are safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling; and
- Are available in different sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture, for indoors and outdoors.
Happy Do Year
If news headlines like “Environment Canada warns climate change could bring mayhem” (Calgary Herald, June 29, 2006), “Winter of 2005/2006 the warmest ever: Environment Canada” (The Canadian Press, March 13, 2006) and “Arctic summers could be ice-free by 2040” (Globe and Mail, December 19, 2006) have not persuaded you that something needs to be done about the impending environmental crisis, then perhaps an increase in landfill tipping fees from $46/tonne to $50/tonne will propel you into action. Increased landfill fees in 2007 will mean that there is a larger incentive to reduce the amount of waste going into your bins and this brings opportunities; whether you do it by reducing waste at the source, increasing reuse or simply recycling more, it doesn’t really matter.
If you’ve been putting off the implementation of a waste reduction strategy, there’s no better time to start than now! If you work for a company that is new to the idea of waste reduction or recycling, or would like to expand your existing program, the Calgary Materials Exchange can help.
