Ashley Lubyk is the new

Waste Wise Community Outreach Coordinator

After living in New Zealand for six months where he worked on organic farms and several earth homes, veteran Clean Calgary employee Ashley Lubyk is happy to return to Clean Calgary as the new Waste Wise Coordinator.

I am proud to announce that I will be taking over the hugely successful Waste Wise Community Outreach Project, established in large part by the hard working and highly personable Karen Morrison. Although Karen has left some big shoes to fill, I am confident that this award winning program will continue to flourish. Dalhousie’s residents have demonstrated their passion and commitment to make the community of Dalhousie one of Calgary’s leading environmental communities through composting.

Waste Wise has worked with over 100 Dalhousie families during the past 18 months, helping them to become confident composters through the support of Karen and a group of dedicated master composters. Participating families have, on average, reduced the waste they send to landfill by 40%. This has principally been accomplished through backyard composting. By participating in the Waste Wise program, many families have become avid composters, and several have already spread their newfound knowledge by adopting and mentoring friends, family and neighbours. The project also seeks to continually engage participants through backyard workshops, discussing topics like healthy shrubs and trees and water wise lawns. These workshops have been immensely successful and I hope to have another before the summer is over. I encourage suggestions for future topics.

Finally, I look forward to meeting with all of the existing participants that have made this project so successful. I would love to hear from those already participating in the program and welcome any questions, comments or composting success stories.
