Waste Management is Clean Calgary Association’s newest gold sponsor

Waste Management has been working with Clean Calgary Association over the past six years, has been a sponsor for the past two years, and they just renewed again.

Usually thought of by their green trucks and bins as a garbage company, Waste Management provides environmental services to customers that go far beyond just hauling waste. They are proactively protecting the environment.

Waste Management has corporate environmental initiatives, programs for their customers and supports their community. Clean Calgary Association works with Waste Management on all of these aspects. The Commercial Environmental Services program works to engage Waste Management customers through education, waste analysis and recycling support. The Education program provides subsidized Waste in our World presentations to Grade 4 students.

ConocoPhillips Volunteers give Clean Calgary and Schools a Helping Hand!

Thank you ConocoPhillips! On Friday, June 12th, ConocoPhillips volunteers constructed 16 compost bins from reclaimed wood. Thank you volunteers!! The bins will be given to 5 schools that are taking part in Clean Calgary Association's year long, school-wide composting program starting in September. The customized bins are a critical part of the program which provides an opportunity for the teachers and student bodies to learn how to compost successfully through 4 seasons. ConocoPhillips is also funding the participation of a school in the program. One of the bins built was given to Bridgeland Community Garden in appreciation for providing the building venue. Thanks also to the students and teachers of Langevin School - a graduate of the composting program - and the City of Calgary's Community Sustainability Team for taking part in the day's activities. We also appreciate the hard work of Michael Stevens of Smart Site Inc. who oversaw construction and worked to ensure that all the wood we used was reclaimed. It was a true community effort!

Know Farmers, Know Food

Q:

Hi Ashley,

Lately, I have been making a conscious effort to eat more locally. This is fairly easy in the summer months, especially because I have my own garden, but winter is definitely more challenging. Much of the local produce is produced in greenhouses and I’m wondering if this is a sustainable option. Is produce grown in a greenhouse actually better for the environment than shipping it from California and is it actually as healthy as food produced in soil? I need your advice.

Thanks,

Sara
