Co-housing: Creating Community in Calgary

According to the Worldwatch Institute, “People who are socially connected tend to be healthier—often significantly so.” Over a dozen long-term studies in Japan, Scandinavia, and the United States corroborate this, showing that regardless of cause, the chances of dying in a given year, is two to five times greater for people who are isolated than for socially connected people.

Clean Calgary Association is now Green Calgary!

On October 22nd, at the EcoStore Grand Reopening, Clean Calgary Association members voted in favour of changing the 31-year-old organization’s name to Green Calgary. The new name reflects the evolution of Clean Calgary’s work over the decades from a focus on litter to our current community programs that address waste reduction, water, energy, air quality, transportation, food, and much more. “Green Calgary” aligns with our mandate of creating healthy homes and communities and is more memorable for the public. Green Calgary’s status as a non-profit, registered charity remains unchanged.

In addition to our new name, you have a great new logo and website. This strategic re-branding was made possible through a generous grant provided by William Joseph, a Calgary-based, full-service communications firm. The grant, entitled Brand-aid, has a value of $25,000 in professional services. The board and staff of Green Calgary would like to extend our appreciation to the wonderful people at WilliamJoseph for their excellent creative services throughout the year. The terrific new website – which we hope you will visit often – is a result of tireless work on the part of Helena Artmann, Green Calgary’s Marketing & Communications Coordinator and the technical expertise of Eric Barstad of Shadowbox Creative Media. Many, many thanks for your hard and detailed work!

Fundraiser Finale – Thank You to Donors!

Green Calgary launched its first ever funding drive in September with the goal of reaching $50,000 by October 22nd. We are delighted to report that we received over $30,000 in donations and that they continue to arrive. This support allows Green Calgary to finish the year off on strong footing and thrive as we enter 2010. Thank you to everyone who generously contributed to the funding drive! A complete list of donors will be posted on our website within the week.

The resulting mulch is used in green spaces around Calgary and is available free of charge to residents.

Wild Rose Breweries is “helping others, one sip at a time” through their Wild Rose Charity Pint Program. Every month, Wild Rose Brewery donates $0.25 for every pint—of a featured beer purchased in the Wild Rose Taproom—to a different charitable organization.  November's charity of choice is Green Calgary!   So if you’ve never been to the Wild Rose Taproom located at 4580 Quesnay Wood Drive SW, or are looking for an excuse to go back, November is the month to do so.

Celebration and Gratitude

Thank you for coming together to support The EcoStore's Grand Reopening on October 22nd.  Celebration was the name of the game: besides delighting in the remodel and picking up sweet eco product deals, evening festivities included the unveiling of our new name and logo, and the conclusion of our First Annual Fall Funding Drive.

Ask Ashley: Put our Money Where our Mouth Is

Q:

Hi Ashley,

I am torn as to where to invest my money.  I’ve spoken to different investment advisors and many of them direct me to SRI (socially responsible investments) but still those investments are with companies that in my personal and professional life stand against.  Where, then, would someone looking to invest responsibly put his or her money?

Yours truly,

Investly Stuck
