2009 was a great year for Green Calgary!

Highlights from our Annual General Meeting

The Green Calgary AGM was held on March 30 in the lobby of the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Business included approval of a revised set of by-laws and the election of five new board members. Returning to the Board are Theresa Howland, Michelle Wickerson, Paula Magdich, Allison Russell, Amber Rutledge, Fraser Tingle and me, Carolyne Kauser-Abbott. A warm welcome is extended to those who joined the Green Calgary Board on the 30th, Jason Demers, Scott McRae, Mardell Van Nieuvenhuyse and Diana Van der Velden.

A special highlight of the evening was the testimonials from participants in Green Calgary’s Healthy Homes program. I believe all in attendance would agree that these were moving and inspirational stories that clearly illustrated how transformative the Healthy Homes program is. Each participant’s experience was unique and the three speakers represented people from all walks of life and levels of environmental awareness. I encourage you to view these heart-felt and motivating testimonials at the Green Calgary website. Thank you to all our members who were in attendance, to the City of Calgary and our many contributors, and to our Healthy Homes participants for sharing their experiences.

Wild Rose Brewery Charity Pint Program

Wild Rose Brewery is “helping others, one sip at a time” through their Wild Rose Charity Pint Program. Every month, Wild Rose Brewery donates $0.25 for every pint — of a featured beer purchased in the Wild Rose Taproom to a different charitable organization. April’s charity of choice is Green Calgary! So if you’ve never been to the Wild Rose Taproom located at 4580 Quesnay Wood Drive SW, or are looking for an excuse to go back, April is the month to do it!

Ask Ashley: What’s Earth Day Good for Anyway?

Q:

Dear Ashley,

I’ve been around a long while and though I don’t mean to sound pessimistic, I wonder what effect Earth Day has had on changing humanity’s course? Does marking a single day for the earth really change anything? I’d like to believe small gestures make a difference but I’ve yet to convince myself. Perhaps you can convince me.

Thank you,

Erica

A:

Dear Erica,

Since 1970 – the year Earth Day was launched – every life support system on our planet has been further impacted. According to the United Nations Global Environmental Outlook (2007), “environmental degradation continues to threaten human well-being, endangering health, physical security, social cohesion and the ability to meet material needs.” The report highlights the fact that despite many efforts, there has been “limited integration of environment into development decision making.” Humans continue to befoul the air, land and water and an increasingly rapid rate.
