Mayor outlines business priorities to Chamber of Commerce crowd

In his trademark social media flare, Mayor Naheed Nenshi opened his Calgary Chamber of Commerce address by taking a picture of the audience and joking that he intended to tweet it mid-speech. Nenshi then expanded on his priorities for the business community.

“My goal is for Calgary to be the best place in Canada to start and grow a business,” said Nenshi at the Nov. 18 event held at the Fairmont Palliser.

To meet this objective Calgary’s new Mayor outlined three key priorities:

  • Ensure sustainability from a triple bottom line perspective (environment, social, financial);
  • Make it easier to do business; and
  • Take a cutting edge economic development approach.

Building a 'Great Calgary' together with our newly elected City Council

 As Calgary’s Mayor and Aldermen settle into their City Council seats, our community has high hopes. Calgarians are looking for actions that build upon our excellent quality of life.

Throughout the election period, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce offered perspectives and ideas around issues that the business community saw as priorities, which were released through the Great Calgary initiative.

‘Great Calgary’ ideas presented to City Council

Last week the Calgary Chamber of Commerce provided the new Calgary City Council with a compilation of its policy briefs released during the municipal election. The comprehensive policy book contains opportunities to strengthen municipal areas of governance, growth and development and finance.

“As City Council begins to set priorities for the next three years, we hope that they will seriously consider our action items,” said Adam Legge, President & CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “Calgarians voted for change. Now is the time for our Council to be more open and transparent, increase mobility choice and adhere to fiscal targets and greater financial oversight.”
