New Oceanfront Trail Launched on Bowen Island
Roger Curtis Seawalk: $1 million gift benefits community and showcases Island's natural beauty
BOWEN ISLAND and VANCOUVER, BC – September 17, 2011, The Cape on Bowen, an oceanfront community located on the southwest tip of Bowen Island, celebrated the completion of the Roger Curtis Seawalk, a new oceanfront trail to the Cape Roger Curtis lighthouse and the completion of phase one road network. A ribbon cutting was held together with a public performance from Juno winner and Bowen Island resident Shari Ulrich on Sept. 16.
Created by The Cape on Bowen Community Development Ltd at an estimated cost of over $1 million and donated to the municipality, who will operate the 1 km trail, The Roger Curtis Seawalk runs north-south, is west facing and offers a spectacular sunset walk that combines a beautiful pebble beach with picturesque views of the ocean, the gulf islands and waterfront terrain.
“We wanted to create a lasting legacy that showcases the community's natural beauty,” says Don Ho, partner, The Cape on Bowen, “The trail features natural oceanfront terrain, breathtaking views and it’s now accessible to more people as we added a board walk that cantilevers dramatically around the cove’s coastal bluffs.”
The Cape on Bowen has beaches, trails, shorelines, and dense woods that have been virtually untouched for more than 50 years. A rich ecosystem thrives on Bowen Island as deer move through the woods. Birdcalls are heard everywhere. Seals, bald eagles, sea lions, and whales can be spotted off this coastal bluff. It is a 35 minute passenger ferry from downtown Vancouver and a 20 minute vehicle ferry from Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver.
“There was no requirement to build the trail and there was a cost,” says Edwin Lee, partner, The Cape on Bowen, “But we felt strongly that adding the trail would benefit the whole community as people within this neighborhood can incorporate the wonderful amenity into their daily lifestyle and islanders who have been coming out to see the iconic Cape Roger Curtis lighthouse for decades will now be able to do so for decades into the future.”
The trail has been open to the public since August 26, 2011. This trail is a Statutory Right of Way granting the public a legal right of passage over the land for a specific purpose.
The Cape's ten-acre home sites offer a unique opportunity to create a legacy home on a south-west facing island property in the Strait of Georgia. The Cape on Bowen has been defying current market conditions by selling over half of its first phase this summer.
