2009-2010: Ballet Redefined
This season our internationally acclaimed dancers bring three major world premiere creations to life and will redefine your expectations of what ballet can be.
Again we proudly represent Alberta when we headline the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad with Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and The Drum. We continue our dedication to collaborating with great arts organizations including the Edmonton Opera, The Banff Centre, One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo and the Calgary Philharmonic and Edmonton Symphony Orchestras. And, we continue our tradition of presenting the finest ballet in Canada welcoming The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s world premiere tour of Moulin Rouge The Ballet.
Our dancers begin their season with the conclusion of our Shakespeare Cycle and an encore presentation of Jean Grand-Maître’s intense and riveting Romeo and Juliet, set to the brilliant score by the great Sergei Prokofiev.
Magic returns this holiday season with our new production of The Nutcracker, choreographed by Edmund Stripe. After a sold-out world-premiere run delighted audiences last year, additional scenery and new choreography will propel this Alberta holiday tradition to even greater heights.
In March, we welcome two emerging yet already internationally acclaimed choreographers to our stage – Emily Molnar and Yukichi Hattori. These powerful new voices in dance join forces with Edmonton Opera’s Artistic Director Brian Deedrick to ignite our stages with a mixed bill featuring four of Alberta’s largest arts organizations and a sextet of renowned classical vocalists. A rare and unique collaboration, Emily Molnar’s Songs of a Wayfarer, set to the mystical compositions of Gustav Mahler and Yukichi Hattori’s theatrically explosive The Seven Deadly Sins by Kurt Weill will enthrall opera and dance lovers alike.
Finally, following our triumphant collaboration with Canadian music icon Joni Mitchell, we are honoured to announce a new such intimate creative partnership with the legendary Sir Elton John. Along with Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître and a world-class design team, Love Lies Bleeding will offer our audiences yet another history making creation. This unadorned portrayal journeys into the psyche of one the most acclaimed artists of the past century and the landscapes that shaped his destiny. Don’t miss your chance to be the first to experience this new world premiere ballet certain to rock the entire planet.
Next season is our most exciting ever and will redefine ballet, carry the Alberta Ballet name around the globe and continue to entertain and challenge you, our audiences, with the ground-breaking performances that you deserve.
